Welcome to the
Ocean Star
Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum
Less than an hour from downtown Houston, the world's petroleum capital, the Offshore Energy Center (OEC) operates its state-of-the-art facility, the Ocean Star.
Visitors step on board, tour the completely refurbished jackup drilling rig, absorb the day-to-day excitement of offshore drilling and production, marine transportation, environmental protection, construction, pipelining - all experienced through three decks of videos, equipment exhibits and interactive displays. It's a museum, educational attraction and working drilling rig all rolled into one.
'The storm'
For locals, any reference to "the storm" is obvious. If someone says a house survived the storm, there is no doubt it predates Sept. 8, 1900.
If people say they had family who died or survived the storm, there is no doubt that they are referring to a family history that goes back more than 100 years.
For in Galveston, "the storm" always refers to the hurricane that tore across Galveston on Sept. 8, 1900, and left the city in ruins.
The internationally recognized Lone Star Flight Museum contains an award winning collection of over 40 historically significant aircraft expertly maintained to flying standards. A few notable aircraft in the collection include the B-17 Flying Fortress, B-25 Mitchell, P-47 Thunderbolt, F4U Corsair, F6F Hellcat, SBD Dauntless and Supermarine Spitfire.

he Museum's flying collection of award winning aircraft annually logs more than 40,000 cross-country air miles to participate in flying displays and air shows. The Museum's P-47 Thunderbolt participates in the United States Air Force "Heritage Flight" program. Comprised of Air Force demonstration pilots and select vintage aircraft, the "Heritage Flight" unites the classic war birds of yesterday with current inventory jet fighters at aviation events across the country. This unique production takes the living history lesson to the public - in the air - rather than the sterile confines of a Museum, and is seen by over 1.5 million people each year.

User Reviews for Strand Historic Shopping District
05/01/2003 Posted by Duffy Dog
I grew up around the Galveston Bay area and saw the Strand change from a Sailor's relief stop to one of the best attractions the area has to offer. Allow at least two-three hours to visit the shops and try at least one of the restaurants. No trip is complete without sampling desserts at the Emporium. A visit to COL. Bubbies is always fun, even if you leave with the sniffles from all the dust.
Pros: Value, Variety, People-Watching
Cons: None, None, None

Hailed by Texas Monthly as the premiere restaurant of the Texas Gulf Coast, this Texas-sized establishment is the perfect spot to unwind while spending your day in Galveston.
Ideally situated next to the Historic Strand District, you can enjoy the famous shrimp kisses, fresh red snapper, or the combination platter on the deck, or in one the many dining rooms - all of which boast of a splendid view of the harbor.
The menu also features savory chicken dishes, signature pastas, and perfectly prepared steaks.
Enjoy waterfront dining at its best at Fisherman's Wharf.
Hi-Tea Ladies Victorian Hat Show w/ a secret twist

Peggy's Victorian Corner was born out of the resurgence of interest in Victorian Era and the costumed re-enactments and re-creations that were becoming an integral part of a number of festivals in the U-S and other countries around the world. The Victorian Era was a time when women, and the dresses they wore, were elegant. And the men, attired in morning coats adorned with vests, ascots, and top hats, were always in a gentlemanly manner or character.
With modern updated fabrics, whose patterns mimic the designs of the Victorian Era... add the accessories that include a Reticule (small hand sewn handbag), Gloves, Fans, and Jewelry to compliment the dresses, The Victorian Corner in Galveston creates magical moments for every woman who has ever dreamed of having lived and played during the Victorian Era. Just ask anyone who has worn a costume from The Victorian Corner? They'll tell you what it's really like to wear a Peggy Wardell original.
From Galveston's "Dickens on the Strand" to Dickens' Festivals in London, England, to Grande Victorian Balls in Texas, Colorado, Mississippi, and Virginia, Peggy's Victorian Corner has worked its magic for festivals participants on both sides of the Atlantic (the Big Pond).
